Almost all of my landscapes are painted plein air. That’s because I have the least experience with them and until recently the least interest. I find plein air is the only way I can learn how to edit complex scenery and recreate the aerial perspective that provides the depth I want. With practice I’ve gotten better but I sympathize with beginning artists who start painting without the advantage of having drawn much and use as their first medium watercolor. And to add to the challenge they attempt landscapes. I think they would have a better chance of success starting with a different medium, say acrylics, and a different subject, maybe a still life. Recently I did a commission of Wisconsin in the fall. I created the composition using a variety of photos for tree shapes and my choice of colors. I couldn’t have done that without lots of prior plein air landscape paintings and a group of artist friends giving me frequent critiques. Huge help.
